How did Mother’s Day first begin?
Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. This tradition reaches back to ancient Greek times. Thousands of years ago the Greeks celebrated a feast in honour of Rhea, the mother of Zeus. Later in medieval England, the church created “Mothering Sunday” to celebrate the holy mother.
The Mother’s Day we know today is derived from the American one. It was invented during the women’s movement in the 19th century. In 1914 the American government officially declared the second Sunday in May Mother’s Day. England and many other European countries followed this example. Mother’s Day has been celebrated in Germany since 1923. In Austria, Mother’s Day was created in 1924 after it was initiated by a women’s rights activist called Marianne Hainisch. Finally, inspired by their German neighbours and with much campaigning from female florists, gardeners, and bakers, Mother’s Day won the hearts of the public and Switzerland adopted it in 1930.
