Size comparison and variable photo length A photo file’s aspect ratio determines in which paper formats the photo can be developed. This can lead to your prints having different sized sides.

For us to be able to develop different photo formats without having to crop any protruding edges, there are the ifolor photo prints with variable photo lengths for the available paper formats.

It’s really easy to calculate exactly which sizes your prints will have. You can find out more here.

Digital Photos - Keep memories alive with scrapbooks

    Keep memories alive with scrapbooks

Scrapbooking is an American DIY-Trend, which is growing in popularity. By combining photos with little souvenirs and different decorative pieces you create a unique memory collection, which is much more than just a photo book. You can make scrapbooks for different events like your last holiday, a family gathering, or an unforgettable trip. Just print out your digital photos and put them together with fitting keepsakes, stickers and handwritten notes in your scrapbook. We recommend using our photo book spiral for scrapbooking because makes flipping through highly decorated pages much easier.

Digital Photos - Create a heart out of your favourite photos

Create a heart out of your favourite photos

You can use your favourite photos to make a great decoration for your living room. Just arrange your photos in the shape of a heart. To do this start with one photo on the bottom. In the next row, place two photos and so on. You can either use the entire wall space or you put your heart in a corner so that it is divided in the middle. How big you make your heart depends on the space you can use and on the size of your photos. Before you put your photos on the wall, you can either arrange them on the ground and see how it looks or you use easily removable sticky tape to design the heart shape on the wall.

Digital Photos - Use digital photos in different formats for a classy wall design

Use digital photos in different formats for a classy wall design

When you print out your favourite photos, you can easily draw attention to them. Just use matching frames to hang them on your wall. Depending on what you prefer you can arrange your pictures in different ways: If you put them on your wall in a symmetrical way, everything looks tidy. If you prefer a more creative approach, you can use different formats to arrange an interesting collage. An idea for more adventurous people: Use different sizes for your photos and put them in different frames. You can select plain or decorated ones, thin or thick frames or frames made out of wood or plastic.

Why do my photos have varying lengths?

When photographing, your photos are shot in a particular aspect ratio which defines the size of the printed picture later. The aspect ratio depends on with which camera model or smart phone you took the photograph.

Our photo paper is produced in rolls with a fixed width. You can choose which width you prefer when ordering your photos (9cm, 10cm, 11cm, 13cm, 20cm); the width you choose will be the shorter side of your photo.

The length of your photos will vary depending on the aspect ratio of your original image, and the prints are cut to scale. In each case, a maximum is defined at a 3:2 aspect ratio. ifolor supports the most common formats, such as 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, and 16:9.

Example with a width of 10cm:

When you have chosen 10cm as the width, the size of the developed photo will be between 10.2cm x 10.2cm (minimum) and 10.2cm x 15.3cm (maximum).

    Ratios:
    1:1 = 10,2 cm x 10,2 cm
    4:3 = 10,2 cm x 13,6 cm
    3:2 = 10,2 cm x 15,3 cm
16:9 = 10,2 cm x 15,3 cm (white bar on top and bottom)

With the classic 3:2 format, you can achieve the maximum amount of picture space. So, when you want to develop photos with varying aspect ratios, you will see that some photos are shorter or longer than others.

How can I tell what the aspect ratio or picture size is?

The ifolor photo prints come in various sizes in order to permit printing of different photo formats without needing to crop images. With the help of the aspect ratio of your digital photo, you can calculate the exact size of your prints.

    1. Calculate aspect ratio
You find the pixel ratio of the image using the data properties of your image. You can calculate the aspect ratio by dividing the larger pixel count by the smaller.

    Example: 3264x2448 pixels
    You calculate: 3264/2448 = 1.33 = 4/3
Therefore, your photo has an aspect ratio of 4:3.

    2. Calculate picture size

Now that you have the aspect ratio, and you’ve chosen the format for your prints, you can calculate the size of your developed photos.

Should you choose the 10cm format, the shorter side of your photo will be 10.2cm long. The other side will measure in accordance with the proportions of your aspect ratio (in this case, 4:3):

    You calculate: 10.2cm * 4/3 = 13.6 cm

The print of your photo, with an aspect ratio of 4:3, is therefore 10.2cm x 13.6cm.

Using the same method you can determine whether your photo is too long or too short. If it exceeds the maximal length, any excess parts of the image will be cropped. If your image doesn’t fill the selected format of your print—for example, by being too narrow—your print will come with a white border.

    Additionally:
Panoramas: Aspect ratio of 16:9, developed with white borders. Order your panorama prints in a somewhat larger format.

    • Square photos: Aspect ratio of 1:1, the pixel count for both sides is identical. Order your square photos as a square print or retro print.
What are the exact sizes of the developed digital photos?

We give you the approximated format. In the following table you can find the exact size of developed photos:

    Format Min. Size Max. Size
    9 cm 8,9 x 8,9 cm 8,9 x 13,4 cm
    10 cm 10,2 x 10,2 cm 10,2 x 15,3 cm
    11 cm 11,4 x 11,4 cm 11,4 x 17,1 cm
    13 cm 12,7 x 12,7 cm 12,7 x 19,1 cm
    20 cm 20,3 x 20,3 cm 20,3 x 30,6 cm

The common format of digital photos has an aspect ratio of 4:3. The photo size of your ifolor photo prints will then be:

Format Exact Size in 4:3 Format
    9 cm 8,9 x 11,9 cm
    10 cm 10,2 x 13,6 cm
    11 cm 11,4 x 15,2 cm
    13 cm 12,7 x 16,9 cm
    20 cm 20,3 x 27,1 cm
How do I change the aspect ratio settings of my camera or smart phone?

On digital cameras, you will find the available aspect ratio under the settings in the menu. Depending on the model, you may be able to set your camera to 1:1 for square shots or 16:9 for panoramas. Make sure that you can see the changed aspect ratio only on the display. Through the viewer, you will always see the same image section. On most models, the aspect ratio is pre-set to 4:3 or 3:2.

On Android devices, you will find varying aspect ratios in the settings of the camera app or as a quick setting directly on the display over shooting mode. You should also be able to choose between 4:3, 1:1, and 16:9. Depending on the device, you may be able to choose various resolutions for a particular aspect ratio.

When photographing with an iPhone, the different aspect ratios should appear directly over the trigger button in the camera app. By swiping, you can choose between ‘Photo’ (4:3), ‘Square’ (1:1), and ‘Pano’ (panorama function). A panorama photo is achieved by slowly moving your camera across the subject. These long photos cannot, however, be developed without losing image. In lieu of this, however, using a photo editing programme, you can divide the photo among multiple photos and develop them individually. The 16:9 ratio is available only for videos in iOS.

Analogue cameras have an aspect ratio of 3:2. This is due to the limitations of small image formatting on film rolls, which can only use this aspect ratio. As such, you cannot change it in analogue photography.

What resolution do I need for my digital photos to get high quality prints?

In general, the resolution of your photos should be as high as possible for all photo products in order to achieve optimal results. When ordering digital photos, you will be shown a quality message upon uploading the images if the resolution of an image is critical or too low. You can still have low resolution photos developed, but they may have poor image quality.

Tip: For optimal print quality (300 dpi), your digital photo should have the following resolution (in pixels) or sensor resolution (in MP) in a 2:3 ratio:

    • Format 9 cm 1050x1600 pixels or 2.0 MP
    • Format 10 cm 1200x1800 pixels or 2.2 MP
    • Format 11 cm 1350 x 2025 pixels or 2.8 MP
    • Format 13 cm 1500 x 2250 Pixel or 3.4 MP
    • Format 20 cm 2400 x 3600 pixels or 10 MP
