Creative photo frames: your children can help you customise your own picture frames or you can make them yourself.

Creative photo frames

Decorate your photo frames or make your own ones for your photos

By putting your photos into the perfect photo frame will make them stand out whether they are on the mantelpiece or hung up on the wall. In this article, we will show you a couple of creative ideas on how you can simply spice up your photo frames at home, which will make your photos really stand out.

Adding some decorations to your photo frames.

Putting felt balls, shells and other decorative items onto your photo frames

Items used for arts and crafts such as small, colourful felt balls, wooden buttons or glitter are ideal for decorating your photo frames. Try out different styles by placing the chosen material on the corners or making the decorative items run asymmetrically from one corner down to the sides. If you would like to make it bright and quirky, you can use a mix of different materials and colours and put them all over the entire photo frame. For a simpler look we would recommend subtle colours and following the basic rule of “less is more”. If you prefer a more natural look, you can also use natural materials to decorate your photo frame such as shells, small stones, small pieces of wood or dried flowers. You can attach your decorative items to your photo frame with some glue or you can also use a hot glue gun. Make sure to be careful if you are using hot glue and you are decorating photo frames with children.

Tip

Our ideas are also great for children who enjoy arts and crafts. Make your own photo frames with your children for their favourite pictures or decorate some photo frames to give to their grandparents. This is a great activity to help keep children occupied on a rainy day.

Tip

If you would like to spice up your photo frame in a simple but modern way, you can also paint it partially with any colour. This will create a particularly chic look, for example, if you paint half of a natural wooden frame in white or in a pastel colour. If you would like to add a bit more colour you can also decorate a plain photo frame with brightly coloured dots.

Homemade photo frames made out of craft sticks for square shaped photos.

Homemade photo frames made out of wooden sticks ideal for square prints

This is a great creative idea for children and it is also perfect for making square prints stand out. Below you will find what materials you will need to make a photo frame made out of wooden sticks:

  • Wooden sticks
  • Super glue
  • Acrylic paint or washi tape for decorating
  • A photo that you would like to put into a photo frame

You can get some wooden ice lolly sticks in arts and craft shops or online and there is a range of sizes and colours to choose from. Choose the right length so that they can be stuck around the photo, but make sure to leave about one centimetre from the corners of your photo. Use four sticks of the same length to create a frame for a square picture. Together with your children, you can first paint the sticks and then stick them onto the frame with some decorative Washi Tape or glitter. To assemble the sticks into a fancy frame, glue the ends of two opposite sticks together on the back and glue the other two sticks on from behind so that the wooden sticks form a square with the ends overlapping. Finally, glue your photo to the wooden sticks from behind and voilà your homemade wooden stick photo frame with a photo is ready to be put up.

Plain or patterned paper straws are great for framing your photos or for decorating plain photo frames.

Decorating your photo frame with paper straws

Another original and fun arts and crafts idea for children is to decorate your photo frame with paper straws. Paper straws come in a variety of colours and patterns, which makes them ideal for spicing up plain photo frames.

What you will need:

  • Paper straws
  • A pair of Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Super glue
  • Plain photo frames

Choose a plain photo frame that fits the size of the photo you would like to put into a frame. Now measure lengthways horizontally how long your straws need to be to cover one side of the photo frame. If the photo frame is lying flat in front of you, you can use the paper straws for the top and bottom of the frame and depending on the size you could even use the full length of the paper straw.

You will need to line them up next to each other so that they completely cover the edges. For the left and right sides, you will need to cut small bits of the paper straw off. Once you have arranged all the straws on the photo frame, you can coat the surface of the photo frame with some super glue and then glue the cut paper straws on one after another. All you have to do is let it dry and your new and quirky paper straw photo frame is ready to be put up.
